What Makes a Great Worker?

Worker. That is the word that is used to describe someone in pro wrestling who can work and audience through speaking and/or wrestling. Sometimes, but rarely, you get a performer who can work an audience into wanting  to watch a weekly television program, buy a pay per view, or buy tickets to an event("puttin asses in seats" is the colloquial term) by using both methods. The list of performers that can, or could, fo that is extremely short, but if you ask any fan of wrestling the list would include the names of guys like Ric Flair, The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Chris Jericho, Shawn Michaels, Dusty Rhodes, Curt Hennig, CM Punk, and very few others. Now, the reason for that short explanation is because of an interview Kevin Nash gave to Grantland . In the interview Nash said the wrestling boom of the Attitude era died when Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit won and celebrated their title wins with each other at the end of Wrestlemania XX due to the size, or lack thereof, of both performers physically and personality wise.

When did you decide you wanted to be a Pro Wrestler?

From the time I was about seven, sitting in my Aunt's house with my cousin Lance and watching wrestling tapes. Hogan, Slaughter, Hennig...loved it all. Something about the larger than life personas attracted me to it, and I was a massive fan. When I was, let's see...fourteen or fifteen, I had a cable box in my room that could get the pay per view channels in with scrambled pictures. I would sit there and listen to matches based only on the commentary, unable to see the match, and I'd sit there for three straight hours and just listen to what they did. It was during that that I realized I wanted to be a storyteller and get to do some of the same things.

Why Hulk Hogan Should Go Away

I have never been a Hulkamaniac. When he and Macho Man had their rivalry I was more of a Savage fan. When it came down to him and Ultimate Warrior, I was rooting for Warrior to once and for all end Hulkamania as we know it. When the Undertaker seemingly took Hulk out I was happier that it finally happened(or so it seemed until Yokozuna did the deed). Hulk just never resonated with me for some reason. When he turned heel I was as shocked as anyone and intrigued, but I was more interested in the NWO as a whole than what was going with , by then, an old dinosaur who could barely move around the ring.

He was just a tiny bit more mobile than he is now. Which means not very. I felt his story was done. By the end of his run in WCW he had literally accomplished everything a person could hope to accomplish in wrestling. He had turned himself into a worldwide brand, recognized by the mainstream, and known to people who had never watched wrestling in their entire lives.

Should Have Been Huge: Bam Bam Bigelow

Imagine if Curly from the Three Stooges, Chris Farley,and a Hell's Angel had a child and you would possibly come close to visualizing Bam Bam Bigelow. While Bigelow was indeed a star, if you look at his size, agility, and image you can't help but think that in an era with outsized personalities that Bigelow should have been bigger, or more famous than what he was. In an era of wrestling that featured slow moving big men, Bigelow exploded on the scene doing cartwheels with ease and top rope headbutts with the ease of a man half his size. One could even say that Bigelow paved the way for..husky athletic wrestlers like Samoa Joe, Umaga, Hernandez, and many other big guys who have become stars on the scene and have shown no fear in letting people know they can do more than a chokeslam and big boot.

Debuting in 1985, Bigelow quickly shot up the ranks of professional wrestling, arriving in the WWF(That used to be the name of the WWE if you happened to find this blog by accident.) with much fanfare as he was paired with Oliver Humperdink as his manager. Bigelow was mainly a midcard performer who was used to elevate guys to main event status all the way until an injury sidelined him and he lost to One Man Gang in the first round of the a title tournament leading into Wrestlemania IV.
